Horticulture Workshops

The technique of raised bed gardening is not a new one – though it has become very popular in recent years. When not doting on hydrangeas, Heritage’s Curator of Hydrangeas, Mal Condon, can be found tending to his extensive array of vegetables in his own raised beds at home. During your visits to Heritage, you may have noticed the lovely vegetable gardens near the Administration building – these are the purview of Senior Gardener, Iris Clearwater, who brings a passion for holistic and conscientious gardening practices for both flowers and vegetables.

Mal has been a champion of raised beds for a very long time and has devoted considerable effort and economics to their application. He is well experienced with design, materials, and construction techniques and - perhaps most importantly - has developed some strong concepts for optimizing their growing attributes to reward the home gardener with superior vegetables and flowers.

Iris’s work at Heritage is dependent on developing a superior plan for each of the gardens she manages, and then setting those plans up for success with careful soil preparation, strong planting techniques, and well-chosen plant groupings. Many of the plants she ultimately puts in the finished gardens start their life as seeds in Heritage’s greenhouse. During the workshop, Iris will share her strategies for preparing a plan for your garden and how to succeed with it using both seeds and seedlings.

Raised beds give the home gardener a plethora of advantages, including superior soil creation & management, minimal compaction, no-till requirements, high density planting, early season soil warming, and easy application of irrigation networks. What’s not to love?

This in-person, small-group, workshop includes the opportunity to view first-hand and up-close Mal and Iris’s techniques and tools in a real garden setting at Heritage. Mal and Iris will discuss:

  • Developing a planting plan (a reasonable one)
  • Size, materials, assembly techniques, and placement of raised beds
  • Filling the raised bed:  applying simple soil science, material sources and amendments
  • Plants & planting:  seeds vs. seedlings
  • Irrigation:  drip vs. surface application, network configurations, and system components

The class will have plenty of on-going time for questions, and you will receive a handout containing all the relevant text, graphics, and resources for your reference. Advance registration is required and spots are extremely limited. Don’t miss this important “how-to” workshop – register today!

Please note that this program will take place outdoors, and may involve hands-on garden work – dress accordingly (in layers) and bring two pair of gloves. In the event of severe inclement weather, this course will be rescheduled to the following day, Saturday, April 2, from 10 am-noon. If the need arises, information regarding this change will be communicated to program participants 48 hours in advance.

Program fees fund Heritage’s mission to inspire people of all ages to explore, discover, and learn together. Thank you for your support. Program Registration Fee:  $40 Members, $45 Non-Members
